Musical Instruments increasingly popular as Christmas gifts – many millions in sales also expected f
This year, musical instruments and music equipment worth around €300 million* will again be among the gifts under German Christmas trees and gladden many a musician’s heart. The central association of the musical instrument and music equipment industry, the Society of Music Merchants (SOMM) e. V. announced in Berlin on Tuesday.
The year’s revenue drivers, or Christmas bestsellers, include quality digital pianos and portable keyboards, guitars and guitar amplifiers, woodwind instruments, electronic percussion, microphones, headphones and recording hardware, as well as live speakers and mixing consoles.
"The Christmas business sometimes shows how well the entire industry was set up in specialist retail over the year, and the extent to which it managed to kindle consumers’ hopes and dreams, to be fulfilled at the end of the year. Our industry makes dreams come true for young and old," said Daniel Knöll, Managing Director of SOMM. "For some, it is the wish to own long yearned-for instruments and equipment; for others, a childhood dream come true. What’s important here is good and extensive advice from competent specialist retailers - especially for newcomers to music."
According to industry trend statistics (IMIS), the MI industry generates revenues of about €125 million at retail prices in each of the months of November and December. In 2010 instrument sales in the two months before Christmas grew 10 percent year-on-year. Similar growth is expected for 2011. The MI industry therefore generates a large part of its annual turnover in the months before and shortly after Christmas.
