As a lobby, the Society of Music Merchants undertakes the traditional duty of a trade association: long-term promotion of sales through active shaping of the economic and political conditions. The association coordinates matters within the industry and to the outside, and cultivates close ties with political bodies, public authorities, institutions and other business associations and market partners. In addition, the association pools the diverse interests of its members and highlights them across sectors vis-à-vis internal and external groups of people and institutions. The conformity among the individual companies was crucial to this constitution from the fields of production, sales, retail and media.

Information about the music industry, an active treatment of issues, and public relations to support the lobbying efforts are essential in this:

External communications

  • Develop comprehensive strategies for representing the industry in public
  • Build awareness for the social components of active music-making
  • Improve the quality of the industry through education, training and continuing education
  • Create transparency and understanding of economic and creative (inter)relationships across the entire music industry
  • Furnish and communicate relevant economic data from the industry
  • Ongoing press relations with editors all over Germany
  • Lead-manage agencies in campaigns and projects (e.g. School Jam)
  • Produce publications for external communications (newsletters)
  • Support political lobbying
  • Support members in their own public relations (trends)
  • Industry talks (background discussions, forums, discussions)

Internal communications

  • Exchange of information and views between member companies and other music industry organisations
  • Coordinate, prepare and host meetings of the association bodies (Management Board meetings, general meetings, Autumn Convention, expert committee meetings)
  • Coordinate members’ working groups unrelated to immediate association tasks (e.g. European School Music Prize ESP)
  • Participate in various advisory boards (e.g., Musikmesse)
  • newsletter and information to members
  • MI-ImPuls (weekly information service about music industry issues)
