Cultural and creative industries

Cultural and creative industries The German cultural and creative industries (CCIs) are one of the most powerful economic sectors in Germany. With a turnover of €175.4 billion and gross value added of €103.7 billion in 2021, it accounts for 2.9% of total economic output, making it one of the country's largest economic sectors. This is slightly above the level of mechanical engineering and ahead of other sectors such as financial services, energy and chemicals. After the significant slump caused by the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, the NPP was thus able to grow significantly again in 2021.

  • 1.8 million people in total employment

  • 226,000 companies

  • 578,000 marginally employed

  • 142,000 euros turnover per full-time employee

The sector stands like no other for creativity, innovation, productivity and economic growth, and is a driving force and shaper for many other sectors of the economy.

As a driver of economic and social transformation, it is a matter of course for the industry to actively shape the digitalisation of society. The eleven sub-sectors (music industry, book and art market, film and broadcasting industry, performing arts, design industry, architecture market, press and advertising market and software/games industry) are closely interlinked and shape our society. The NPP in its entirety is of outstanding importance for democracy, social cohesion and the diversity of our country as well as the various value chains, which must be consolidated in a common understanding of economic and social interrelationships.

Some sectors, such as music publishers (-3%), recording studios (-5%) and sound recording retailers (-15%), will continue to suffer losses in 2021, while theatre and concert organisers (+5%) and German sound recording publishers (= labels, +10%) will see their turnover increase again.
A total of 84,280 people were employed in the music industry in 2021, 1.8% fewer than in 2020. In particular, the number of persons employed in marginal jobs decreased significantly (-7%).
